WDC Charles Street Upgrade

EDR was engaged to deliver the Charles Street upgrade and reinstatement, improving infrastructure, accessibility and safety in accordance with WDC standards. The project included extensive civil works, stormwater and water reticulation, footpaths, signage and landscaping. By coordinating multiple construction elements, EDR delivered a fully upgraded street environment that meets Council requirements and community expectations.

Scope of works

The project involved a wide range of civil and infrastructure tasks, including:

  • Preliminary & General - Site establishment, survey and setting-out, traffic management and as-built submissions
  • Kerb, Channel & Concrete (Charles Street) - Remove existing kerb and channel, install new kerb and channel (WDC SD201A), modify kerb for pedestrian cut-downs (SD213), install commercial crossing beams (SD201B), undercut unsuitable material and replace with bulk fill, reform road shoulder, and apply 50mm AC14 asphalt
  • Stormwater (Charles Street) - Connect property stormwater outlet (SD329), install 100mm PVC property lateral, supply and install precast sump (SD325), connect to existing stormwater pipe, and remove redundant sumps
  • Footpaths & Vehicle Crossings (Charles Street) - Strip, regrade and resurface footpaths and entranceways, construct new footpath (SD222), replace unsuitable material with bulk fill and install solid covers and frames to suit new levels
  • Signs & Roadmarking (Charles Street) - Install new line marking, remove redundant markings, relocate signposts, remove redundant sockets and supply/install parking restriction signage
  • Miscellaneous (Charles Street) - Clear planter boxes and vegetation inside NZ Post property boundary
  • Kerb, Channel & Concrete (Motorhome Dump Station) - Install concrete island and NZMCA precast dumping units, construct nib kerb, modify kerb cut-downs to 9.2m, wall-up existing kerb cut-down
  • Drainage & Water Reticulation (Motorhome Dump Station) - Install new potable and non-potable water connections, lay 100mm UPVC pipe from dumping units to manhole, remove existing dumping point and gully trap
  • Metal Courses & Surfacing (Motorhome Dump Station) - Excavate and dispose of contaminated material, replace with bulk fill, place 100mm M4/AP40 basecourse, and lay 50mm AC14 asphalt
  • Signs & Roadmarking (Motorhome Dump Station) - Remove existing signage, supply/install potable and non-potable water signage with painted timber bollards
  • Berms & Landscaping (Motorhome Dump Station) - Supply and place topsoil, hydroseed and construct new garden bed

Project Outcome

The Charles Street project delivered a fully upgraded street and motorhome dump station that enhances safety, accessibility and infrastructure resilience. Through precise construction, coordinated project management and attention to detail, EDR provided a lasting, high-quality upgrade that benefits both the community and local services.
