Queenstown Event Centre Artificial Turf
The Queenstown Events Centre (QEC) is the district’s central hub for sport and recreation, home to Alpine Aqualand, Alpine Health and Fitness, the Rockatipu Climbing Wall, outdoor sports fields and adjacent to Frankton Golf Centre. As part of a wider masterplan to expand and improve community facilities, the first major project was the development of a new artificial multi-purpose sports turf designed for hockey and futsal.
Scope of works
EDR was contracted to deliver the turf and supporting infrastructure, including:

Preliminary & General - Site establishment, supervision, project management, OH&S implementation, services coordination and as-built documentation

Earthworks & Demolition - Excavation, disposal of unsuitable material and preparation of subgrade for construction

Pavement Construction - Pavement layers for main field and warm-up area including geotextile, basecourse and asphalt surfacing with full testing

Drainage - Installation of pipes, subsoil drains, manholes, soak pit and sumps with reinstatement to existing ground conditions

Concrete & Kerbing Works - Concrete footpaths, access ways and kerbing with thickened edges and broom-finish surfaces

Irrigation & Water Supply - Watermains and connections with fittings, reinstating disturbed areas to existing conditions

Trenching & Foundation Works - Trenching for electrical services and pad foundations for lighting towers

Disestablishment & Reinstatement - Topsoil reinstatement around new works, shaping of viewing bund and batters, grassing and maintenance until established
Project Outcome
EDR delivered a world-class artificial turf facility which enhanced the QEC’s reputation as a premier sporting destination. The new hockey and futsal surface was built to exacting standards, providing durability, playability and long-term value for the local community and visiting teams.
